Cogeneration

Cogeneration is the simultaneous production of electricity and heat from natural gas, petroleum products, coal, waste or biomass.

The heat given off by power production is recovered and used either to heat buildings or as part of an industrial process.
Cogeneration technology sharply improves the use of primary energy by achieving an overall efficiency that can exceed 80%.

When cold is also produced, the term trigeneration is used.

This diagram shows a gas-turbine cogeneration setup.
The energy created by the rotation of the turbine is converted to electricity using an alternator and the thermal energy contained in the turbine's combustion gas is used to heat the heating network's water.
