Innovation Serving Responsible Industry
The project is based on the principle of waste heat recovery: heat generated by cooling towers is now captured and reused. Thanks to the installation of a high-capacity heat pump (HP), this energy is repurposed to meet the thermal requirements of the site. This solution relies on the electrification of energy uses: to ensure this energy transfer, the heat pump consumes approximately 2.4 GWh/year of electricity, thereby transforming thermal loss into a high-per-formance, decarbonised resource.
- Nearly 1,900 tonnes of CO2 emissions avoided annually
- 10% reduction in the plant's annual gas consumption
- 10.4 GWh of gas offset per year thanks to the valorisation of recovered heat
Magali Hainaut, Director of the Fresenius SMAD Site: "At Fresenius Medical Care, energy transition is an operational reality. This new heat recovery system enables us to offset over 10 GWh of gas per year. It is a key structuring project that embodies our vision of responsible performance: manufacturing essential medical devices whilst sustainably reducing our environmental footprint."
Jérôme Aguesse, Regional Director at Dalkia: "This project illustrates the commitment of Dalkia's teams to the decarbonisation of industrial processes. By placing electrification at the heart of this facility, we transform energy loss into a valuable, decarbonised resource. Fresenius Medical Care demonstrates that it is possible to reconcile industrial performance with environmental stewardship. We are proud to support this progress."
Franck Dumaitre, Regional Director of ADEME in AURA: "ADEME, as a French state agency, is proud to support this exemplary project, which demonstrates how public financial support helps industrial players implement the best decarbonisation technologies. Every euro of public funds invested here reduces our fossil fuel imports and contributes to national energy sovereignty. By valorising its waste heat, Fresenius Medical Care secures the long-term sustainability of its activity at the heart of our regions."
